Arithmetic Mean

Formula & Definition

Simple Arithmetic Mean

Definition

The quotient obtained by dividing the sum of the given data by the number of terms is called mean of the given data. It is also called arithmetic mean or only mean. It is denoted by X̄ (read as X bar). If the given data is denoted by X, the sum of data is denoted by ΣX (sum of all X values). If the total number of data is 'n', the mean is

Formula

X̄ = ΣX / n
Mean = Sum of all observations (ΣX)Number of observations (n)
  • X̄ = Arithmetic Mean (read as X bar)
  • ΣX = Sum of all data values
  • n = Total number of observations (terms)
  • The mean is the quotient when sum is divided by the number of terms
