Introduction to Sustainable Development

Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations. Adopted in 2015, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the UN provide a global blueprint to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity by 2030. Every action counts — from clean energy to gender equality.

SDGs: Global & Nepal Progress (2025)

As of 2025, global SDG progress is off track — only 17% of targets are on course. Nepal has integrated SDGs into national plans, with strong gains in poverty reduction and renewable energy, but challenges remain in sanitation, climate action, and inequality.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals

Each goal tackles a critical global issue. Examples:

  • SDG 1: No Poverty
  • SDG 7: Affordable & Clean Energy
  • SDG 13: Climate Action
  • SDG 15: Life on Land

Interconnected: Progress in education (SDG 4) boosts health (SDG 3) and economic growth (SDG 8).

Nepal's SDG Progress (2025)

Nepal aims to graduate from LDC status by 2026. Key achievements:

  • Renewable energy: 99% electricity access, 2,200 MW hydropower
  • Poverty reduced from 25% (2015) to ~15% (2025)
  • Forest cover: 44.74% (community forestry model)
  • Gender parity in primary education

Major Challenges

Global and local barriers slow progress:

  • Climate Change: Glacial melt, floods, droughts
  • Inequality: Urban-rural & gender gaps
  • Funding Gap: $4 trillion/year needed globally
  • Data Gaps: Weak monitoring in remote areas

In Nepal: Post-earthquake recovery, political transitions, and migration complicate SDG alignment.

How You Can Contribute

Individual Actions Matter:

  • Reduce waste & recycle
  • Use public transport or cycle
  • Support local & eco-friendly products
