Xylem is made of dead hollow tubes called vessels. It carries water and
minerals absorbed by root hairs upward through the stem to the leaves. The flow is always one-way —
upward — and is pulled by transpiration.

Xylem tubes are completely dead — their walls are hardened with a substance called
lignin, which also makes the stem strong!
