Rotation through +90° about any point (a, b)
Definition:
Rotation through +90° (positive quarter turn) about the point (a, b) turns a figure 90° anticlockwise around that point. Each point keeps its distance from the centre of rotation (a, b). Here the centre of rotation is (–1, 1).
1. Problem:
In the given graph, when the vertices A(1, 5), B(4, 2) and C(–4, 3) of triangle ABC are rotated through +90° about the point (–1, 1), the rotated vertices A', B' and C' of triangle A'B'C' are shown in the graph. What are the coordinates of A', B' and C'? Compare and draw a conclusion.
2. Procedure:
Rotate the vertices A(1, 5), B(4, 2) and C(–4, 3) through +90° about the point (–1, 1), write the coordinates of the rotated vertices A', B' and C' and discuss on your conclusion.
3. Points (A and A', B and B', C and C'):
A(1, 5)Ro [(–1, 1), +90°]A'(–5, 3) = A'[–5 + (–1 + 1), 1 – (–1 – 1)]
B(4, 2)Ro [(–1, 1), +90°]B'(–2, 6) = B'[–2 + (–1 + 1), 4 – (–1 – 1)]
C(–4, 3)Ro [(–1, 1), +90°]C'(–3, –2) = C'[–3 + (–1 + 1), –4 – (–1 – 1)]
4. Formula:
Thus, P(x, y) — Rot: [(a, b), +90°] → P'(–y + (a + b), x – (a – b))
5. Conclusion:
Under a rotation of +90° about the point (a, b), every point P(x, y) moves to P'(–y + (a + b), x – (a – b)). So triangle ABC turns 90° anticlockwise about (–1, 1), giving A'(–5, 3), B'(–2, 6) and C'(–3, –2). Its size and shape stay the same.
