Understanding Genus and Species

Same Genus – Different Species

Genus = Family name (closely related)

species = Personal name (unique adaptations)

Genus: Panthera (Roaring Big Cats)
Bengal Tiger

Bengal Tiger

Panthera tigris
• Solitary • loves forests & water

• Males have mane
• Savanna/grassland lifestyle

Think & Discuss (2-3 minutes):

1. Why do Bengal & Siberian tiger have the same species name (tigris)?
→ They can interbreed; very closely related!

2. Why do Lion & Snow Leopard have different species but same genus Panthera?
→ Similar body, roar, claws... but different habitats & lifestyles

3. Now look at foxes: Why same genus Vulpes?
→ Both are small, clever, bushy-tailed foxes with similar features
Key Rule: Same Genus = Close family • Different species = Unique adaptations & lifestyles

What is Genus?

Genus is a group of closely related species sharing common features and a recent common ancestor.

It ranks below Family and above Species in the classification hierarchy.

  • Panthera → Lion, Tiger
  • Canis → Dog, Wolf
  • Homo → Human
  • Brassica → Mustard, Cabbage

What is Species?

Species is the most specific and basic unit of classification.

Members of the same species can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.

  • Lion → leo
  • Tiger → tigris
  • Human → sapiens
  • Mustard → campestris
