When the denominator divides the numerator completely (after simplifying), the decimal ends after a finite number of digits.
Examples:
1/2 = 0.5
3/4 = 0.75
7/8 = 0.875
5/10 = 0.5
♾️ Non-Terminating Decimal
When the denominator does not divide the numerator completely, the decimal continues forever (repeating or non-repeating).
Examples:
1/3 = 0.333... (repeating)
2/3 = 0.666... (repeating)
1/7 = 0.142857142857... (repeating)
5/6 = 0.8333... (repeating)
🎯 Decimal Types Quiz
If the denominators have only multiples of 2 or 5, the number is a terminating decimal.
If there are numbers other than 2 and 5 in the denominator, it is a non-terminating recurring decimal.
