Modes of Nutrition

Nutrition is the process by which organisms obtain food and energy for growth and survival. Organisms are mainly classified into Autotrophs and Heterotrophs.

Autotrophs and Heterotrophs

Autotrophs (plants) vs Heterotrophs (animals)

Autotrophic Nutrition

Autotrophs are organisms that make their own food. Plants are the main example. They perform Photosynthesis using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.

Photosynthesis

Sunlight + Water + CO₂ → Glucose + Oxygen

Heterotrophic Nutrition

Heterotrophs cannot make their own food. They depend on other organisms.

  • Herbivores: Eat plants
  • Carnivores: Eat animals
  • Omnivores: Eat plants & animals
  • Parasites: Live on other organisms
Heterotrophic nutrition

Summary / Comparison

Autotrophs make their own food while heterotrophs rely on other organisms.
